Impact of the HIB Bacterium

Before the release of the HIB vaccine, over 50% of Meningitis cases were caused by the HIB bacterium, 3-6% of those cases being fatal.

That’s nearly 1000 children every year.
Approximately 1 in 200 children in the U.S. developed invasive Hib disease before their fifth birthday.

More than half of these cases occurred in children younger than 12 months.
As recently as 2000 (before widespread vaccine use in many countries), Hib caused an estimated 370,000 deaths and over 8 million serious illnesses (primarily pneumonia and meningitis) worldwide.
