The HIB Bacterium

What is it?
HIB is a type of bacteria that resides in a person's nose and throat, spread through sneezing and coughing. While harmless to most adults, children under the age of 5 and people with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of becoming seriously ill.
HIB doesn’t cause symptoms itself, but it can cause serious diseases such as:

Pneumonia
An infection that inflames the air sacks in the lungs.


Meningitis
Inflammation of the meninges (tissues) that cover the brain and spinal cord.


Cellulitis
Infection of the deeper layers of the skin.


Bacteremia
Prescence of bacteria in the bloodstream/bloodstream infection


Septic Arthritis
Infection of the joints, causing inflammation.
